Geographic Information System (GIS)
GIS is a computer based system that contains information about the world that has been
abstracted and simplified into a digital database of spatial and nonspatial features. It
permits the capture, maintenance, retrieval, integration, visualization and analysis of
georeferenced data. “GIS allows us to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize
data in many ways that reveal relationships, patterns, and trends in the form of maps,
globes, reports, and charts.”
California's counties, universities and state departments have been utilizing GIS to create
geographic references of the most current and accurate parcel data of their counties. For
